Composer and Sound Designer
William Bishop (aka Groovin’ Apple) (b. 1997) is a video game audio programmer, sound designer, and composer based in Austin, TX. He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Composition from the University of North Texas, where he studied under Dr. Drew Schnurr, Dr. Panayiotis Kokoras, and Dr. Michael Smith. His music maintains a distinct eclectic style, pulling from both concert and electronic standards.
Will served as a technical sound designer for Retro Studios for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond for nearly 3 years. During his time with Retro Studios, Will was primarily responsible for integrating environmental audio and UI audio, building dynamic systems for ambient audio and player systems, working directly with engineers to create new tools and technologies to aid in development, and working directly with the game’s composer to integrate their music into the game. He also aided in work on creature audio integration, coordinated with and integrated audio assets from outsourcing partners, and designed some environmental audio.
Additionally, he has provided sound design and audio programming for the games Ari’s Journey, Catalyst Black, and Hamster Scramble, as well as sound design for the audio script Tooth and Claw. As a composer, he has produced two albums, and provided arrangements for the Metroid fan Album Harmony of a Hunter: Returns.
Currently, William runs a YouTube channel where he makes sound design tutorials and video essays, and does freelance sound design work on games, both in the AAA and indie genres.
